Community Service
As of the fall of 2017, the community service requirement for AVID has been updated. Now students must complete 20 hours of service where a minimum of 10 hours must come from community service and a maximum of 10 hours of volunteer service.
Community service consists of work completed through recognized non-profit organizations that service the community. Some examples would be to work for the city/county library, beach clean up, feeding homeless, assisting foster youth, planting trees, working 5K and 10K races that support non-profit organizations.
Volunteer service consists of activities like helping a teacher after school, leading a Sunday school at a church, being part of a music ministry at a church, setting up or working at activities for sport or campus clubs.
Students must maintain evidence of all community service hours as well as keep a community service log.
These hours will be worth class points. The community service log posted to the AVID students' digital portfolio at the end of each semester.

How to Get Involved
There are many people, places, and organizations that need volunteers. Here are some tips for getting started:
- Look around your community and in the phone book to see what programs are there. Call and ask if they need help.
- Visit your city or town website. It may list volunteer opportunities in your community.
- Contact your local United Way, cultural arts association, student organization, or another association that can point you in the right direction.
- Ask your library, church or synagogue, and/or community colleges if they sponsor any volunteer groups.
- Formal community service can be done through a place of worship, however, the act of service must effect the community outside of church service. For example, planting trees, feeding the homeless, working at a carnival etc.
- Check out the following websites to learn more about causes and to find volunteer opportunities near you.
Questions You Should Ask Yourself Before You Volunteer
It's important that you enjoy the type of service you choose and that you have the time to stick with it. Ask yourself these questions before you commit to an organization.
- How much time do I have to commit?
- Do I want an ongoing, regularly-scheduled assignment, a short-term assignment, or a one-time assignment?
- Am I willing to participate in a training course or do I want to start my volunteer work immediately?
- Which talents or skills do I offer?
- What would I most like to learn by volunteering?
- What don't I want to do as a volunteer?
- Do I want to work alone or with a group?
- With what kind of people do I want to work -- both in terms of who is receiving my services and who my co-workers might be?
Current Volunteer Opportunities from San Diego Rescue:
For the following community service you must be 16 years old or older.
If you are interested in volunteering in the programs listed below for San Diego Rescue, please contact Deborah Krakauer (Vonlunteer Coordinator) at: [email protected] for more information.
Food service in our men’s dining hall, takes 6-10 people at a time, depending on the shift. Lunch time is 10:45-12:00 and dinner 3:45-5:00 daily and does need to be reserved ahead of time. Either male or female may serve.
Warehouse sorting projects
Larger groups of up to 30 may reserve a weekday morning spot in our City Heights warehouse to sort donated items. This is extremely vital to decide which items go to our four thrift stores, where the proceeds benefit our residents, or if the items are needed here in the Mission.
Sleepless San Diego
Our fundraiser/awareness raiser on the issue of homelessness takes place at Liberty Station on October 11-12. Volunteers are needed that afternoon and early evening to help with set up and also staffing some of the interactive booths (putting together care packages for the homeless), doing art projects to go to the children in the Mission, etc. Details on the event can be found at www.sleeplesssandiego.org
Outreach for our Holiday Community Meals
Three times a year, we have holiday meals where actively conduct an outreach and invite the homeless to our early Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter meals. We gather at the Mission at 8AM the Saturday before Thanksgiving and Christmas, conduct a quick training, and divide up in groups with flyers to walk the streets and invite the homeless to our early holiday meal later that day. Volunteers will be needed on November 22 and December 20 from 8:00-11AM.
Individual volunteers are always welcome for food service. We do have limited opportunities evenings working with the children in our year-round program.
